The Philosophy of Painting

The video work has been made together with media artist Markus Renvall. The core is making art in a course disabled people`s home, where I taught a couple of years. I became interested in the intimate communication between the dissabled person making art and his assistant. The communication is not based only on speeking, but also on alternative communication methods. When the pencil or brush on held by two persons, making an imprint requires mutual understanding. The video showes the working process of six maker – assistant pairs during one session. It also has three interviews of the staff, and they tell about the meaning of the course to the residents of the home and assisting in the art process. The tenth part shows painter Maaria Märkälä`s painting process and captures the thoughts of a professional painter. The eleventh part turns the camera to the makers of the document and show our thoughts. Communication requires a will to understand the other. Painting is both a mental and a physical act. The work was shown as five channel version in Art Fair Suomi in Cable Factory in Helsinki 2017.
